In a contest dominated by serve, one break in each set proved enough for Vinci to close out a 6-4, 6-4 win.
The decisive moment in the opening set came in the fifth game, Kuznetsova coughing up a series of errors from the baseline before surrendering serve with a double fault. With Vinci imperious on serve - winning 93% of first serve points - this lapse proved costly.
This hole got considerably deeper in the opening game of the second set when Vinci expertly carved a backhand down the line to bring up three more break points. She only needed the one, a forehand into the corner proving too precise for the Russian to scramble back.
Kuznetsova had her chances to break back - most notably when she moved to 0-40 in the following game - but Vinci's serve held firm, completing victory after an hour and 30 minutes courtesy of another well-placed forehand winner.
"I'm really happy. Today was tough match, and it's a tough group for me," Vinci said. "The court is not so slow, but I think the balls are a little bit heavy. But it's nice - the stadium is not so big and also the crowd are great.
"Of course I'm really happy - two sets against Svetlana is not always easy. She's a great player. She won Moscow, so probably she was in confidence, but I played well today."
On Thursday, Kuznetsova faces former World No.1 Caroline Wozniacki in her second round robin outing, needing victory to keep alive her hopes of reaching the semifinals.
